In the Fall of 1987, under the direction of Rev. William Mills, the First Presbyterian Church organized a day care called the Christian Children's Center as an outreach program for the church & community. The Center is a non-profit daycare/learning center. The Center seeks to serve the needs of the community by providing daycare services to preschool children in a safe, caring, Christian environment. The Center strives to instill in the children the joy of learning at an early age, and we intend to provide an environment in which intellectual, moral, physical, spiritual, and social growth flourish. We want children to learn independence through practical life activities by pretending in the home living centers, putting away toys and taking care of his/her personal needs. These enable the child to gain self-confidence through successful completion of work meaningful to the child. The Center is open from 6:30 am until 5:45 pm, Monday through Friday. The Center serves two snacks per day and a hot lunch. The Center is licensed for children 2-5 years of age on a full time basis. The children are divided into groups according to age for the morning preschool activities and then are in a multiage group in the afternoon.

The Center participates in many different learning experiences. The children are pen pals with another preschool in California. We have been "adopted" by the residents of Wellington Place in Athens, as assisted living retirement community. Various community resource personnel have visited throughout the year. Some of these include a Native American from the Cherokee tribe who performed for us, an Army sergeant for Veteran's Day, a dental hygienist who brought toothbrushes and lost tooth keepers, and firemen. Some of the Center's special activities include a visit to the grocery store, water day, our own Olympics, a Fall Festival, and participating in a Walkathon for St. Jude's Hospital. The staff of the Center consists of six teachers, a cook, an administrative assistant and a director. All staff members are required to attend in-service training sessions.
